Colors of Folklore

The Night of the Arts – Taiteiden Yö is one of the most exciting cultural events organized by the city of Oulu. The Association of Poles in Northern Finland has proudly taken part in this celebration of art for the third time. Every year, the event attracts thousands of people from Oulu and the surrounding areas, who come to enjoy street art performances, concerts, and a wide variety of creative expressions – often becoming artists themselves!

In previous years, we shared Polish poetry with the Finnish community. This year, we decided to showcase the richness and vibrant colors of Polish folklore – especially its most recognizable element: traditional floral patterns.

Our wonderful volunteer Anastazja created a large floral design inspired by Polish folk art – reminiscent of Łowicz paper cuttings and Kurpie embroidery. Everyone who visited our stand had the opportunity to paint their own flower or design element using their imagination. In this way, we created a colorful, large-scale artwork – joyful, diverse, yet wonderfully cohesive. This form of creation – open, spontaneous, and inclusive – perfectly reflects the spirit of the Night of the Arts.

The Association of Poles in Northern Finland provided all necessary materials – paints, brushes, and other supplies. The children were the first to eagerly start painting – enthusiastically choosing and mixing colors and creating their own interpretations of traditional motifs. Soon after, adults joined in with equal enthusiasm, often working side by side with the youngest participants. The atmosphere was full of smiles, laughter, conversations, and positive energy.

This collectively created artwork became a symbol of collaboration, creativity, and openness to other cultures – values that the Association has been promoting for years.
You can admire the results of our joint effort in the photos!
