Autumn in Rokua smells of forests, mushrooms and campfires!
For many years, Rokua has attracted visitors with its picturesque forests, sandy trails and beautiful scenery. It is also a place that members of our Association have grown particularly fond of. For the past six years, we have been meeting in Rokua every autumn for a traditional mushroom-picking trip – and this year was no exception.
Although the weather forecast was not particularly promising and scattered showers were expected, there were still plenty of people willing to join us. A little rain was certainly not enough to stop us! Equipped with rain jackets, rubber boots, baskets and plenty of good spirits, we set off into the forest.
And, as always, the forest did not disappoint. During our walk of more than 5 kilometres, we managed to find not only beautiful porcini mushrooms but also other treasures of the forest. Our baskets quickly began to fill up, and an additional surprise was the discovery of bilberries. We picked enough to take home several jars, with plans to use them to make delicious homemade bilberry buns.
Our route also took us to an observation tower, where we could admire the picturesque Rokua landscape and the beautiful views of the surrounding lakes. It was a perfect opportunity to take a short break, enjoy the scenery and appreciate the beauty of the Finnish autumn.
During the walk, we did indeed get caught in the forecast rain, but fortunately the shower lasted only a few minutes. Soon we were able to continue our journey through the forests of Rokua.
After several hours of walking, searching for mushrooms and enjoying nature, it was time for a well-deserved rest around the campfire. There were, of course, grilled sausages, fresh bread and sweet marshmallows to roast over the fire – a particular favourite among the youngest participants.
There was plenty of time for conversations, laughter, shared food and relaxation after the forest walk. The children could enjoy playing outdoors, while the adults had a chance to chat and simply enjoy spending time together.
Our sixth annual mushroom-picking trip in Rokua is now behind us. Once again, we were reminded that even uncertain weather cannot spoil a day when you have good company, a little adventure and the beautiful Finnish nature all around you.
