As part of the Oulu 2026 – European Capital of Culture programme, this year’s cultural calendar in Oulu is exceptionally rich and diverse. One of these events was the International Games Day in Oulu, organized at the newly renovated Saari City Library. The Association of Poles in Northern Finland was invited to participate in this international event and had the opportunity to share with the residents of Oulu the joy of games with a Polish theme.
Thanks to the Game Nights organized by our Association for many years, we currently own more than 20 different board games. However, we could only bring selected titles to this event.
The day began with a fun domino game featuring Kraków, Highlander, and Łowicz folk motifs – described by our international players as exceptionally colourful and beautiful. Next came “Dwojaki” – the Polish version of the internationally popular game Dobble. When a map of Poland from the game “Ticket to Ride” appeared on our table, enthusiastic participants quickly gathered for an exciting game together.
Our young volunteers, Matti and Kristian, were an invaluable help, enthusiastically explaining the rules of the games to everyone interested. After an exciting game focused on building railway routes across Poland, it was time for a Memory Game featuring photographs of Poland’s most beautiful cities and landmarks. At the end of the event, Kristian encouraged everyone to discover the legend of the Wawel Dragon while presenting a game based on this famous story.
During the event, attended by hundreds of Oulu residents, we had a wonderful opportunity to share Polish culture and knowledge about Poland through engaging and entertaining games. We would be delighted to take part in similar initiatives in the future as well.
